The Dinosaurs Munch On Sunflower Seeds

October 3, 1989

I watched a program on public television. Dinosaurs' descendants are birds, it said. I watch finches feeding on black sunflower seeds. Do Mesozoic memories haunt them?

They watch, stone-still but poised for flight. Their small, hard eyes still hold a touch of the ancient lizard.

Watch them. They remember a primordial swamp filled with huge bones of ancestors - steaming.
