AUSSIE POLICE ARREST ANTI-NUCLEAR PROTESTORS

October 3, 1989

Anti-nuclear protesters ended a five-day protest at a US-Australian military intelligence base after 500 demonstrators were arrested, some after breaking into the base. About 50 soldiers were called in to reinforce base security forces and police at the base in southern Australia. Demonstrators picked the intelligence-gathering base as a protest site because they consider it a likely target in the event of a superpower nuclear confrontation.
