September 19, 1989

India promised Monday to withdraw its 41,000 troops from Sri lanka by Dec. 31, ending a dispute between the two countries. A Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry statement said India had given an assurance that all efforts would be made to complete the withdrawal by that date. India also agreed to a cease-fire by its troops in their fight against Tamil separatist guerrillas from early Wednesday morning.
