DENG REPORTED TO NAME PARTY CHIEF AS HEIR

September 19, 1989

Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping has selected the Communist Party General Secretary Jiang Zemin as his successor, The New York Times reported Sunday. According to the Times, Mr. Deng named Mr. Jiang as his political heir less than two weeks after the June 3-4 massacre of students occupying Tiananmen Square.

Jiang is a former party chief of Shanghai. Though he is identified with a recent crackdown on intellectuals there, Jiang is considered to be clearly identified with the policy of economic openness to the West.
