An Aug. 18 Monitor article on the Pilgrim nuclear power plant contains several points requiring clarification: Boston Edison made the decision in 1986 to shut down the plant after a series of unexplained equipment failures. This led to an NRC investigation, after which the company and the NRC agreed that the plant would not be restarted without NRC approval.

A Boston Edison spokeswoman says the $200 million the utility spent on the plant was for maintenance, modifications, and refueling, and not on a test program.

The plant has 30 state-licensed reactor operators. On three occasions in the last two years, however, all the plant's reactor operators who took the state test failed it: six in 1987, 15 in March 1989, and six in June 1989.
