CHINA TO KEEP MARTIAL LAW FOR TIME BEING

August 18, 1989

China intends to maintain martial law in Beijing for the time being, a Chinese government spokesman said in a Japanese newspaper published Thursday. State Council (cabinet) spokesman Yuan Mu also told the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper that former Communist Party general secretary Zhao Ziyang might face criminal charges. Mr. Zhao, believed sympathetic to the democracy movement, was stripped of all his official posts by the party's central committee.
