PROGRESS SEEN AGAINST FIRES

Firefighters in California contained two large blazes, and dozens of Idaho residents returned home Aug. 8, a week after fires forced them out. Battling the fires that have charred 220,000 acres in western states since July 26 has cost more than $27 million, the Boise Inter-agency Fire Center said.
