BAKER CANCELS US DELEGATION TO JERUSALEM

July 17, 1989

New assurances from Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir on Israel's commitment to Palestinian elections prompted the Bush administration to cancel a delegation to Jerusalem, Secretary of State James Baker III said Saturday. Mr. Shamir gave assurances that his commitment had not changed ``one iota,'' Mr. Baker said. Baker had planned to send several of his closest aides to Jerusalem to see if Shamir still planned to go ahead with the elections as approved by the Israeli coalition cabinet in May.
