POLAND'S JUNE 4 ELECTIONS

May 25, 1989

As a result of round-table negotiations concluded on April 5, Poland will hold the freest election it has experienced since 1945. The agreement relegalized the independent trade union Solidarity and restored a freely elected Senate. In exchange, Solidarity negotiators agreed to ``nonconfrontational'' elections guaranteeing the Communist Party and its allies a 65 percent majority in the more powerful lower house.

The accords also reinstituted a new presidency with broad powers. The president will be elected for a six-year term by a joint session of both chambers.
