ARABS CALL FOR RETALIATION AGAINST ISRAEL

May 22, 1989

Pro-PLO leaders of the Palestinian uprising issued a rare call Saturday for retaliatory slayings of Israelis. ``The Unified National Leadership of the Uprising calls on the strike forces to kill a settler or a soldier for every martyr of our sons,'' said a leaflet, the 40th published in the territories since the start of the anti-Israeli rebellion.

Uprising leaders have made repeated calls for attacks on Israeli targets, but in the past have stopped short of urging retaliatory killings.

PLO chief Yasser Arafat warned that the use of arms may increase if Palestinian deaths continue to climb.

``So far our people refrained from using arms in resisting the occupation forces, but the Israelis should understand that our patience is limited,'' Arafat told reporters Saturday in Baghdad, Iraq.
