APARTHEID BANNED IN NAMIBIA

May 16, 1989

Apartheid was officially banned in Namibia last weekend, under a United Nations independence timetable that designated May 13 as the day when South African-inspired race discrimination laws should be scrapped. However, UN officials say it will take a little longer before legislated apartheid becomes a thing of the past. Town councils, education, health services, and the national pension scheme are still racially segregated.
