The House Ethics Committee formally charged Speaker Jim Wright (D) Texas, with 69 violations of House ethics rules, including accepting nearly $145,000 in gifts. Mr. Wright denied the charges. Abebe Mekonnen of Ethiopa's and Norway's Ingrid Kristiansen won the 93rd Boston Marathon Monday. Mr. Mekonnen won the 26-mile, 385-yard race in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 6 seconds, the seventh fastest men's time ever in the race.

Miss Kristiansen's winning time of 2:24:33 was the third-fastest ever for a woman.
