SWAPO TO LEAVE NAMIBIA UNDER UN ESCORT

April 11, 1989

Radio messages beamed into the Namibian bush are offering SWAPO guerrillas UN protection in line with an agreement between Cuba, Angola, and South Africa on ending eight days of clashes. The fighting, which has killed at least 290 people in northern Namibia, had threatened to derail Namibia's transition to independence. It began April 1, when between 1,500 and 2,000 guerrillas of the South West Africa People's Organization allegedly infiltrated into Namibia from Angola.

Under the terms of Sunday's deal, UN forces will escort the SWAPO fighters back to Angola.
