Like Whitman walking under trees

Like Whitman walking under mighty trees ``Melodious thoughts descending'' as I go I think that more than anything I know (Not only for the birdsong and the breeze Stirring their branches with brief melodies) They seem to stand for music's linear flow - The way their branches interlace and grow Around each other in rich traceries - Branch counterpoint of line against arched line Now contrary, now moving parallel In music's not quite tangible design With all its leafy ornaments as well: Motion implicit, even when no sign Of slightest turbulence remains to tell.
