When stars come out. Filling in the spaces

August 2, 1988

After midnight the city and its hills are shaped like pips of light which one connects like the child's dot game, like making Cassiopeia from zigzag stars, to satisfy the thought, give it place, space things out with beings. It is the old in and outdoor sport, thought supplying what is missing, surveying the dark streets, the future, the past, all unknown things, and filling in the spaces, so often very well - that is the wonder - so often well.
