Report of Pakistani uranium-enrichment plant

December 14, 1987

Pakistan is building a second uranium enrichment plant at Golra, near Islamabad, according to a report in the Friday edition of the Financial Times of London, based on Western reports. Pakistan already has such a facility at Kahuta. The paper noted that the Golra plant, which is not yet operational, further complicates Pakistan's relations with the United States. The US is concerned that a goal of Pakistan's nuclear program is the development of nuclear weapons. US intelligence reports say Pakistan's Kahuta facility has enriched uranium to 90 percent, suitable for such weapons.

According to the report, US satellites have watched the construction of the plant at Golra over several months.

The Pakistan embassy in London said the Golra reports were baseless.
