Who would have thought the first sight they saw as they stepped ashore was a landscape of the kind they had left behind three months before? Holly, holly, the ``holy plant.'' Holly everywhere, as in England, holly all along the way green and welcoming as May, even on this wintry day, to let them know what men have always known: as all roads led to Rome, all journeys may be journeys home.
