A great turning over

April 10, 1987

April, and ice sinks, The last land-locked edge melts, Water rises, gathers weight Until, with a great cracking And breaking, an arctic chill Floods the warm marsh burrows. Rising up before algae, reeds Or the slender wax tapers Of the willow greening Are the rich brown mounds Of the muskrat, mudplastering, Moving upstairs again.
