January 5, 1987

Clara strikes sparks on a distant concert stage; Robert in the wings hears his notes flame under her fingers; Their children at home -- lonely little grace notes; Caring for them the family friend, childless, his lullaby still unsung. He plays a game -- he hides; they seek but cannot find. Then from the depths of a blanket box comes a whistled call: ``Ode to Joy.''
