US will inform if radiation leaks

September 25, 1986

The United States will inform other countries of radiation leaks from accidents involving nuclear weapons as well as civilian nuclear plants, Energy Secretary John Herrington said yesterday. ``The United States will also voluntarily provide notification with respect to any other nuclear accident which has or may have trans-boundary effects of radiological safety significance,'' Mr. Herrington told an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) conference.

Asked whether this meant military nuclear acidents, Herrington replied: ``Yes.'' Earlier the Soviet Union and Britain also said they would give information on both civilian and military accidents.
