Cayuga geese

May 1, 1986

``To belong at Wells College you have to write a poem about the geese.'' The air divides. A flock tilts all degrees down, wings held, adjusted, witness to the invisible. The only prayer they know thrills pinions, braced, accepting, then folded. The water says yes again. Their pledge brings more than honor -- an arch renewed, a higher vault, a school with more than blue sky over it.
