Deer fence

April 1, 1986

Old stone walls don't Keep deer out. Besides, the stones fall down. (See Robert Frost for reasons.) I build my deer fence With chicken wire called ``Poultry netting'' at the store. With metal stakes I describe Perimeters protecting plants That I would like to eat Someday, weather willing. That done, my neighbor halts And smiles once. ``So you believe good fences Make good deer,'' he says. I nod my head, pleased With his allusion. And then he tells me Deer can dig. Joel Ferree
