Making a knot

August 22, 1985

Watching my fingers rub and twirl to make a knot, I perceive for the first time I am tangling the threads. For fifty-seven years I have done this, not once taking thought, blind to what was happening, hidden between my fingers, like yeast fermenting in secret, deliberately shaping trouble I usually avoid. At least, I try to avoid. And I feel surprise and wonder -- so simple an act, yet profound, and stop to wonder why I never noticed how I did this, and realize the many uncontemplated acts that abound in my life, leaving me in a state of bliss!
