Lull of summer

July 24, 1985

The streams have flowed as fast as they can flow. The grass has grown as high as it can grow. The days have lengthened out as far as days ever can. Brightly as sun can blaze the sun has blazed! Therefore, this seems true: summer has done as much as it can do! The peak is reached for roses and for birds and even for flattering admiring words! It is the lull, when summer seems to stand hanging on to all that lies at hand, contented with it, but pleasantly resigned, waiting to see what autumn has in mind.
