A tradition repeats

January 22, 1985

A central, but silent, role in a presidential inaugural is played by the Bible used for the taking of the Presidential Oath. During this inauguration's two swearing-in ceremonies, Ronald Reagan took the oath of office after placing his left hand on The New Indexed Bible, King James Version (left), that once belonged to his mother, Nellie Reagan. Prayer also plays a key part throughout. As the Rev. Billy Graham observed during a Sunday prayer service at the National Cathedral: ``Prayer should be the habit of everyone on this team we call America -- whether elected official or private citizen. . . .''
