US airlifts supplies to famine refugees in Sudan

President Reagan ordered the Air Force on Sunday to fly emergency supplies to refugee camps in eastern Sudan for thousands of Ethiopians who have fled the famine in their homeland, the Agency of International Development announced. Some 3,000 Ethiopian refugees are arriving in Sudan each day, said AID.

Administration officials said Friday the US will send 50,000 tons of food aid through Sudan to famine victims in Tigre and Eritrea where rebels are fighting the Ethiopian government for autonomy.
