'84 Olympics, with big profit, offers to pay countries' costs

Los Angeles Olympic officials, who had said before the summer games they expected to make just a few dollars, announced Wednesday night a profit of at least $215 million and offered to pay the expenses of foreign competing countries.

Former committee president Peter Ueberroth said countries that had helped to make the games a success were entitled to share in the financial bonanza. Officials estimate the offer would cost $6.8 million.
