4 in House favor US contacts with Vietnam, Kampuchea

Four House members, saying they are concerned about an increased Soviet presence in Indochina, called upon the Reagan administration Tuesday to open direct communications with Vietnam and Kampuchea.

Rep. G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery (D) of Mississippi, who headed a recent House delegation to those two nations and Laos, said the US should explore cultural and athletic exchanges as well as joint scientific programs into the effects of the herbicide Agent Orange, used during the Vietnam war. He stressed that he was not calling for formal diplomatic recognition of Vietnam or Kampuchea.
