Union Cabide spews tons of toxic chemicals at Institute Pentagon denies report of copter missions

A government scientist says Union Carbide's Institute plant, the only US producer of the chemical involved in the Bhopal, India, disaster, emits 11,000 tons of toxic matter into the air each year.

Dr. Peter Infante, an Occupational Safety and Health Administration scientist , said at a congressional hearing that many of the some 60 emitted chemicals - such as benzene, ethylene oxide, and formaldehyde - are considered hazardous to health.

Meanwhile, in Bhopal, processing of the leftover deadly gas at the Union Carbide plant got under way yesterday, with officials reporting that ''everythig is under control."
