World chess challenger wins his first game against Karpov

Gary Kasparov scored his first victory in the world chess championship Thursday when titlist Anatoly Karpov resigned the adjourned 32nd game without resuming play.

The game was adjourned after 40 moves Wednesday, with the 21-year-old challenger holding a pawn advantage. Karpov still leads 5 to 1 in the the match, which has gone on for almost 14 weeks. The first player to achieve six victories wins the match. Draws do not count.
