Programs for the poor face $6 billion cuts, study says

Nearly one-fifth, or $6.1 billion, of President Reagan's $34 billion in proposed domestic budget cuts would come from programs for the poor, a study released Thursday showed.

The study, from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, said the cuts would extend into the next three fiscal years and would include medicaid, Community Services and the Legal Services Corporation, supplemental security income for the aged, blind, and disabled, Head Start, various housing and health programs for the poor, and special food programs for poor children and pregnant women.

Cuts in programs for the poor added up to $31.3 billion in the last three years.
