Weinberger says idea to cut military pay was not his

Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger flatly denied Thursday he had proposed freezing or cutting the salaries of military personnel. But he did not deny that the suggestion of freezing military pay in fiscal 1986 had been broached during White House meetings Wednesday, or that such a step might ultimately be taken.

He acknowledged yesterday that he submitted some recommendations of his own to the President for slowing the defense buildup, but he refused to discuss them.
