Australian Cabinet shuffled in wake of showing at polls

Prime Minister Bob Hawke has carried out a drastic shuffle of his Cabinet following his closer-than-expected victory in the Australian federal elections. The lower vote for Labor meant Mr. Hawke was unable to dictate either the size of his Cabinet or its general makeup. The various factions agreed that the 27 men and women who served in the previous Cabinet should continue as ministers. But Hawke reorganized their portfolios, changing the areas of responsibility for fully two-thirds of his ministers.
