Soviets to help Syria build nuclear reactor

The Soviet Union has agreed to help Syria build its first nuclear reactor, the official Syrian Arab News Agency said Tuesday. The two countries have signed an agreement to conduct immediate geological and geophysical surveys to choose a location.

Syria is the Soviet Union's strongest Middle East ally. The two countries signed a 20-year treaty of friendship and cooperation in 1980.
