Labour would seek arms cut but stay in NATO, chief says

A future Labour Party government in Britain would negotiate a nuclear arms reduction pact with the Soviet Union but would not enter any separate military agreement, British opposition leader Neil Kinnock said Wednesday. He said the next Labour government would keep Britain in NATO and Britain would play its full part in the collective defense of the NATO alliance.

The Labour Party is pledged to dismantle Britain's seaborne independent nuclear deterrent and throw out US nuclear weapons based on British soil. When Mr. Kinnock visited Moscow last month, Soviet leader Konstantin Chernenko told him the Soviet Union would meet this with a missile-by-missile reduction.
