Grenada holds its first elections since 1976

Elections take place today on this Caribbean island for the first time since 1976, with candidates running for 15 seats under the British parliamentary system. The New National Party, formed four months ago in a merger of three moderate groups, is considered by most foreign observers as having the best chance to form the new government. It is led by Herbert Blaize, an attorney who formerly headed the Grenada National Party and was the island's chief minister from 1962 to 1967, when it was still a British colony.
