Salvadorean rights group wins Robert Kennedy prize

A private Salvadorean group received a human rights award here Tuesday despite strong reservations by some State Department officials who say the organization is made up primarily of left-wing political activists. Msgr. Oscar Arnulfo Romero Mothers' Committee was chosen by the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation to receive the prize, which carries a $30,000 stipend, from among more than 40 potential recipients worldwide. The committee has made no secret of its hostility toward American policy in El Salvador.
