Grinzing honkers

November 19, 1984

''GOOSEY, goosey gander, Whither shall I wander?'' In Grinzing, Austria. On the main street, no less. Nursery rhymes aside, geese the other day were being used as de facto policemen.

Seems conventional means had failed to rein in speeding drivers in this Vienna suburb. Drastic action was necessary. Thus seven geese and a gooseherd were summoned from the, uh, goose barn.

Their job: walk to-and-fro across the main street, herding motorists to a screeching stop. Aiding the honkers - the web-footed ones - were townspeople, who sprinkled goose feed on the road.

It's one town where speeders know where they stand in the pecking order.
