New jobless claims rose slightly in Oct. 27 week

First-time claims for unemployment benefits rose by 2,000 in the week ended Nov. 3, the Labor Department said Thursday. New applications for benefits, adjusted for seasonal variations, totaled 414,000, compared with 412,000 in the week ended Oct. 7, the Employment and Training Administration said.

The total number of Americans receiving regular unemployment insurance compensation benefits under state-run programs reached 2,489,000 through Oct. 27 , up 38,000 from the previous week's total, the report said.
