Mitterrand-Qaddafi summit possible as troops leave Chad

With the last French and Libyan troops having left Chad over the weekend, the French say a summit meeting is possible between President Francois Mitterrand and Col. Muammar Qaddafi.

The end of the 15-month standoff represents a diplomatic success for the Mitterrand government just when its standing had dropped to all-time lows in opinion polls. French troops were sent to Chad in August 1983 to stop the invasion of Libyan-backed rebels. After they arrived, the Libyans refused to confront them.
