The Discovery zooms off to rescue stray satellites

Shuttle Discovery vaulted into orbit Thursday morning and began pursuit of two wayward satellites that two free-flying, jet-propelled astronauts are to retrieve in a daring salvage mission. During eight days in orbit, the crew of four men and one woman is also to deploy two communications satellites for paying customers and conduct crystal-growing experiments that could lead to a key new industry in space.
