Halloween

October 29, 1984

A white fence With most of its pickets Rotting and broken Barely stands between An old shack And a cracked sidewalk.

A black cat perches on the fence. Its green eyes glow With the light Of a perfectly full Yellow moon.

The clock in the church belfry Solemnly strikes the midnight hour. A gust of wind Sends leaves scuttling down the sidewalk. A witch swaying back and forth On her broom Cackles piercingly As she swoops over. The cat yowls And leaps into the air.

I shudder And walk away.
