GM of Canada and UAW reach tentative settlement

Some 31 hours of continuous bargaining in Toronto, Canada, resulted in a tentative settlement Oct. 27 between General Motors of Canada and the United Auto Workers. UAW said it ''recognizes Canadian realities.'' Ratification votes on Monday are expected to end a 12-day strike by 36,000 unionists. The walkout has idled more than 40,000 workers in the United States because of critical shortages of parts made in Canada.

The agreement, if approved, will put more money into wage increases than US workers won, but will not include the job security and profit-sharing provisions of the US contract.
