US talks fall short of getting Japan to limit steel exports

Talks between Japanese and US trade officials trying to win voluntary limits on Japan's steel exports ended Tuesday without an agreement, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry said.

Deputy US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, who led the US delegation, asked for a cut in Japanese steel exports to the United States, but he did not propose limiting Japan's share of the US market to a specific figure.

Last month President Reagan rejected a US International Trade Commission recommendation for quotas on steel imports and called instead for voluntary negotiations with major steel-exporting nations.
