Plane didn't crash where US said it did, Salvadoreans say

Salvadorean soldiers said Saturday that a plane crash Friday that killed four American Central Intelligence Agency employees occurred on the San Salvador Volcano, just west of the capital, and not miles farther north at the Guazapa Volcano as US Embassy sources reported.

In Washington, the State Department said a claim by the rebels that their guerrillas shot the plane down ''is not true.'' The spokesman also denied that the plane was directing ''some sort of bombing run.''

US intelligence sources in Washington said Friday that the CIA plane, unarmed and equipped with night photography equipment, was trailing an aircraft suspected of carrying arms to Salvadorean rebels.
