Canadian GM strike expected to affect US plant operations

Some 36,000 members of the United Automobile Workers went on strike at noon yesterday against General Motors of Canada Ltd., the first time in 14 years. UAW Canadian director Robert White said there was no chance a tentative agreement could be reached with Canada's largest automaker.

The strike was expected to have an immediate effect on GM operations in the United States, where many of the assembly plants depend on Canadian-made parts.
