US, Britain abstain on South Africa resolutions

The UN Assembly voted 133-0 to condemn South Africa's racial policies as a ''crime against humanity and a threat to international peace and stability.'' The United States and Britain abstained from voting.

US representative Alan L. Keyes said after Friday's vote that the American delegation joined in ''condemning the inherent injustice of apartheid,'' but felt that revulsion for the policy did not entitle the General Assembly to ''indulge in violent rhetoric that can exacerbate an already tragically violent situation.''
