Minnesota Indian reservation wins right to city services

Prior Lake officials were wrong to deny the right to vote in city elections to Indians who live on a reservation inside the city limits but don't pay taxes, a federal judge has ruled. He also ordered that police, fire, and emergency services be provided free to the reservation.

Mayor Gary Johnson said the city would appeal the ruling, which creates an additional burden on the city's taxpayers. Mr. Johnson was elected last fall on a platform calling for cooperation between the city and the Sioux reservation.
