CBS ordered to stand trial in Westmoreland libel suit

A judge ruled Monday that CBS must stand trial in a $120 million libel suit filed by Gen. William C. Westmoreland over a ''60 Minutes'' report that he distorted enemy troop figures during the Vietnam war.

The ruling clears the way for a trial that would raise issues about both the conduct of military leaders during the war and of news reporting methods.

The trial is scheduled for Oct. 9.
