Formal Hatfield inquiry ruled out by Senate staff

The Senate Ethics Committee staff has determined that there was not enough evidence to justify a formal inquiry into whether Sen. Mark O. Hatfield (R) of Oregon improperly used his influence to aid a Greek businessman, the panel's chairman, Sen. Ted Stevens (R) of Alaska, said. Senator Stevens made the recommendation after a closed committee meeting Wednesday.
